Sonic boom meets sundog

FYI the phenomena occurs around the 2:10 mark

This video shows the launch of NASA's Solar Dynamic Observatory aboard the Atlas V space shuttle on February 11. Just after lift-off the rocket it passes through a colourful sundog.

Sundogs are formed by plate-shaped ice crystals in high, cold cirrus clouds. As the crystals drift down from the sky they tend to align with their broad faces parallel to the ground. When sunlight hits a patch of well-aligned crystals at just the right angle the result is a sundog.

As Atlas V passes through the clouds it sent shock waves rippling through the clouds destroying the alignment of the crystals and the sundog vanishes. A number of amateur observers captured the moment on camera and it makes for impressive viewing.

In the past, there have been anecdotal reports of atmospheric disturbances, for instance gunshots, destroying sundogs but according to NASA this is the first time the effect has been captured on video.

Re: Sonic boom meets sundog

Hey guys, here is a video which shows the launch from another angle- start at 9:40:

Sancho, and those of you without the youtube, here are screenshots of the rocket leading up to the sonic boom.

A strange dark beam can be seen in front of the rocket... as if the rocket's shadow was cast frontwards - what do you guys think it could be? :

It looks like the rocket is lit up where the beam appears to strike it.

The United States has been conducting anti-missile tests lately, including the testing of airborne lasers too... :shifty:

LOS ANGELES - A high-powered laser destroyed a target missile in flight off the Central California coast in a milestone test of a futuristic but troubled national defense system, the Air Force announced Friday.

A laser weapon mounted on a Boeing jumbo jet tracked the missile as it accelerated over the ocean off the Point Mugu Naval Warfare Center Thursday night, then fired an energy beam that heated the missile until it cracked and broke up, according to statements from the Air Force and two aerospace companies involved in the program.

This infrared image shows a beam from the Missile Defense Agency's Airborne Laser Testbed (right side) destroying a short-range ballistic missile (left side).

Perhaps this was a test of some sorts. That is why so much attention has been paid to the sundog - misdirection; look at the sundog damnit! :holiday:
