Gates at I-16 exit ramps installed to aid hurricane evacuations

SAVANNAH - The orange and white striped gates, resembling a pair of football goal posts standing 20-feet high, look like they were made to stop traffic at a railroad crossing.

But there aren't any train tracks to cross at the 26 exits along Interstate 16 where the control gates have cropped up since May. The gates are there to control traffic during a hurricane evacuation.

The state Department of Transportation calls them ``drop-gate barricades'' and has installed the gates at most I-16 exits along the 115-mile stretch west from Savannah to Dublin.

The gates are part of Georgia's latest attempt to iron out the kinks in its evacuation plan since Hurricane Floyd threatened the coast in 1999 and I-16 became a one-way escape route.

``The biggest thing this does is free up state troopers and law enforcement officers who had to stand at the top of these ramps and keep people from getting on,'' said DOT spokesman Brent Brantley.

Floyd prompted the largest peacetime evacuation in the nation's history, and I-16 bore the brunt of 2.5 million people fleeing the coast from Georgia, Florida and South Carolina.

Officials turned I-16 into a one-way road, essentially doubling its capacity by allowing evacuees to flee west using the eastbound lanes.

Still, the interstate became a giant traffic jam, requiring 600 law enforcement officers to keep cars moving in the right direction while blocking the eastbound entrance ramps.

Rural sheriff's departments sent deputies to help watch interstate ramps blocked with barrels and bulldozers, leaving them with less manpower to control gridlock that spilled over into their cities and towns.

The small city of Swainsboro found itself overwhelmed with evacuees who were seeking shelter or seeking an alternate route to the interstate gridlock. On Highway 80, cars backed up 11 miles to the town of Twin City.

``It was so bad the mayor himself got out and started directing traffic,'' said Chief Deputy Henry Curl of the Emanuel County Sheriff's Department. ``I've been with the sheriff's department 18 years and never seen so many people in our town.''

State officials have made other changes to the evacuation plan since 1999.

Interstate 16 is an east-west highway in Georgia. It is one of the 13 two-digit interstate highways, which are continuous and located only within a single state. I-16 stretches 166.81 miles from the port city of Savannah to its western terminus at I-75 in Macon. It is officially designated as the James Gillis, Sr. Memorial Highway in honor of the late longtime Georgia Highway Department director.

Interstate 16 having the gated ramps was explained and I find it to a very good idea. They learned from their past mistakes and improved on an evacuation plan to help minimize the number of police needed to affect an evacuation.

Remember that their main goals is for hurricanes so this is good.

As for the join exercise that too inst anything I see as nefarious.

Right before it became warm out, I think it was around Feb., my kids were out fishin in the back yard and a black heilcopter came over the lake, it was so low that it scared my boys b/c they saw the "army guys w/ guns looking down at them" My boys said they were in black uniforms. They came screamin back to the house. (scared to death)
They continue to go over our home. We are NO where near a base, either. I'd say out of 20, 7 would be black. I don't know the difference either. Not much info I can find is available to give a straight and satisfying answer.

That is why all the activity is CrAzY! No reason for it that we can see. Even the direction over our home is nothing towards Flordia, or any other "troubled" site from the oil spill.

We see soldiers all the time coming through the town.. It has become something so "normal" that no one notices anymore, but me. They "say' they are just passing through. But! To where?? ugh.. worries me

Alex Jones says that some people in Oregan have been arrested and taken to a "debt concentration camp."
On yt, there are many vids about those type camps everywhere unused at this time, but, there is activity going on. I"m not sure how I feel about Alex Jones.. i've had many thoughts towards him, just not sure if it trust him. Although, I have had seen some proof to what he says here about FEMA coffins.

We are looking to move to upper TN or KY.. just don't have a pin point place yet. I'm looking now, but don't have a clue about the areas up there.
