Google to offer ultra high-speed broadband in US

Share It:

Google is spreading its wings in yet another direction - this time as a network provider, offering super-fast broadband to thousands of US homes.

It plans to build a fibre-optic network offering speeds of up to 1Gbps (gigabit per second) to up to 500,000 homes.

It said it would compete on price with other broadband providers offering much slower speeds.

Google said the trial was about promoting killer apps that would take advantage of fast speeds.

"We planning to build and test ultra high-speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States," the search giant said in its blog.

"We'll deliver internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today," it continued.

Wow that sounds really great right?
Ask yourself at what cost though...besides the monthly service fee.

I don't think they'll be looking at us fritatiously or amorously- but that wasn't the original meaning of the word- more like "eyeing us" is what I take it to mean... :to_keep_order: :shifty:

This actually doesn't bother me much, frankly there is little that matters in 99% of my internet use, i'd deal with google the ogler being the provider in order to better stream entertainment based content, this kind of line turns your internet into a jack for your HD TV which for me means tons of money...

You just might want to choose a second line for downloading and porn and stuff... frankly you should even have a seperate computer for those activities if you engage in them...

but a gig a second? That's phenomenal, just treat it like talking in public and follow the same guidelines you do in RL when speaking aloud when using it...

and for people who are using their computers to talk, there won't be tha time lag in converstion-(lipsync?)- so their words will match up better with their lips right?

A gig a second means you can video conference on 46 inch flat screen tv with 10 different people on split screen in perfect time...

You can broadcast HD network quality video and it will download to a persons computer in under five minutes for playback...

With advents in 3-d technology genuine virtual reality mmogs become possible... you can explore any environment like you are really there... in other words they can put you into Pandora with the quality of Graphics used in the movie Avatar and with a head set you can be there....

Local web cams will be able to broadcast real time footage in HD of locations to your flat screen, you could.... eat breakfast with a view of 42nd street or the Waves in Hawaii

It will of course take time and servers and lines... but I am super glad someone is doing this...

Is this Internet II? The amazing advanced technology internet that will relegate Internet I to the realm of infomercials?

it's the fiberoptics thing-"speed of light transmissions" go faster than radio or microwaves- am I right "techy" people?

Unlike metallic-based systems, the dielectric nature of optical fiber makes it impossible to remotely detect the signal being transmitted within the cable. The only way to do so is by actually accessing the optical fiber itself. Accessing the fiber requires intervention that is easily detectable by security surveillance. These circumstances make fiber extremely attractive to governmental bodies, banks, and others with major security concerns.

was exposed to possible "paranoid thought form" one time- it said with fiberoptics it went both ways- could "big bad wolf/ves watch little red riding hood/s ( or sheeple as case may be),better with this technology--- thought form said my tv could be "watching me back"- seemed unlikely- but never had someone to ask about it that sounded like they knew answer- you do...

This is my Mom's computer- and she likes her google page- and I have "gmail" for my email- so even though I put the tool bar from what you posted here in for searches, we still have the google account- I'm not authorized to change it- although wondering what email service would be "free and better"- I find it really interesting that sometimes, as I type here, I can watch every word I'm typing, streaming by in that go ogle search window-

Re: Google to offer ultra high-speed broadband in US

The problem with using your computer for phone calls is the exposure to viruses and the security of the system. There are secure VOIP systems using video phones available at very reasonable rates and much better technology than that shitty Skype.
