Hobo Cook Stoves

Share It:

You can easily build a "Hobo Stove" using a #10 can or a one gallon steel can. You cut an upside down "U" in one side of the can making it from the open bottom toward three quarters of the way toward the top. I always make it about 4 inches wide. On the opposite side you punch many holes in it with a nail. This will be your draft.

When you're ready to begin cooking you put a handfull of dried twigs in your opening and start your fire. Once they are going well you'll have to keep adding to the pile. You can then begin cooking on the flat top of the little stove. Many a chicken egg, dog or cat and I'm sure a few plump chickens were cooked on one of these little stoves during the Depression by one of the many Hobos who traveled around the country during the 20's and 30's.

You don't need kerosene or gas to cook with. Twigs are readily available just about anywhere.

Re: Hobo Cook Stoves

Thanks Caseyboy! It's some very good information, and seems fairly easy. I'm thinking you'd need to let the cooking service burn off any toxic material first? Do these need a break in period, or need to run a fire for any length of time before cooking?

Yup! We've done that is both, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. #10 Tin cans work great as a poor man’s camp stove.

In addition, if you save the lent that you pull from your dryer exhaust and save your paper (not Styrofoam) type Egg containers, fire starters can be made by placing the lint in the Egg shape and then pouring some liquefied (heated) candle wax onto the shell.

Re: Hobo Cook Stoves

Most people simply cook on the top of these litttle stoves. You set a pot or pan on top and cook. No break in necessary. Thus the food and the stove do not come in contact with one another,
