This is truly fascinating. I wonder, as other articles have stated, if this is "insurance" in case of an attack on WikiLeaks.
"AES-256" is a very powerful cryptographic algorithm adopted by the U.S. government. I'll shit a ton of bricks if this file turns out to be garbage data

...
Here is some of my own research while studying this file using a hex-editor:Keep in mind that I am in no way an expert in this field...The word "Salted" (random-bit cryptography) appears in the header, which means this file is indeed encrypted...
While doing a string search for "7zip", it appears 5 times throughout the file at the following addresses:
0x0172259B
0x0AAA7311
0x0B926459
0x31A590C8
0x4D66FA06
^^^The first one could be the initial "zip" of the file in question and the last 4 could be the zips inside. Or those could be 5 separate zip files containing the contents. Also, due to encryption and the size of the file, there is a great possibility that the words "7zip" appear only out of randomness...This site has more information.
Here is some more.
Something that got my attention:Jul 6, 2010
"The site's founder, Julian Assange, said the organisation was still working to prepare the encrypted film of the bombing of the Afghan village of Garani in May 2009, in which the Afghan government said about 140 civilians died, including 92 children."
Taken from
here.
"Jul 6, 2010"? "Encrypted film"?... I don't know...

"What, Sir, is the use of a militia? It is to prevent the establishment of a standing army, the bane of liberty. ...Whenever Governments mean to invade the rights and liberties of the people, they always attempt to destroy the militia, in order to raise an army upon their ruins"
